So my last hermitcraft post went slightly viral and it made me keep thinking about admin!grian. I ended up thing of this au.:

  • So grian drops by X's base for something, (I haven't thought of what) and sees X slaving away over the code. X's tired and grungy and just not taking caring of himself cuz he's working so much.
  • Grian immediately pulls him away to get some self-care in and starting nagging at X to take a freaking break for once, cuz you know that this isn't the first time X had been caught like this.
  • X, being a sarcastic strider™ when he's tired is all like "well if you think your so much better why don't you take a crack at it for a while." He tries to be quiet with his sass but grian is like right next to his face cuz he's dragging X to a bed and hears it all anyway.
  • This gives grian ideas.
  • See grian doesn't look it, but he's really good with code (he help found wynncraft after all) and he's been an admin to a server filled with YouTubers before (see his evolution series).
  • So grian is actually pretty qualified to take over admining for hermitcraft if the need arises. He'd just rather not cuz he prefers not to have that responsibility.
  • It's not that he can't or won't, he just doesn't have too and he's perfectly ok with that.
  • X however is very much in need of a break from the admin work and grian is the most qualified around at the moment. . .
  • So he pitches a sorta spur of the moment plan.
  • Grian takes over all admining duties from X for a period of 1 to 2 weeks. Depending on how X feels about it.
  • X spends that time taking a much deserved break while grian handles the work load for him, and at the end of it it all gets transferred back too X.
  • Basically X makes grian the server admin for a little bit while he catches a shower and gets some self-care.
  • X of course is pretty against it at first. Being the workaholic he is.
  • But when he's reminded of all of grian's admin credentials, he actually considers it.
  • TBH X is pretty tired of how much he's had to run himself ragged, and at this point even he's admitting he needs some down time.
  • So they go through with it, and the next day X announces that grian will be taking over for awhile so X can get some r&r.
  • It. . . Doesn't go over as well as expected.
  • See while X knew about grian's admin work as part of recruiting him for hermitcraft, and mumbo knew about it cuz they were friends from before. . .
  • The rest of the hermits didn't actually know that grian knows what he's doing.
  • They only know him as his prankster persona. And the admin stuff is never actually brought up around the others.
  • So while the hermits in general consider grian a great friend, they don't really see him as admin material.
  • To their credit, they are nice about it. But most of the hermits just don't think grian's gonna do a very good job, and it shows.
  • By God it shows.
  • Grian gets annoyed with there lack of faith pretty quickly. And proceeds to blow the hermits expectations out of the water.
  • Like, no one would say grian is a better admin then Xisuma, because he does things so differently it's honestly hard to compare them. But it become very obvious very quickly that grian is a good admin.
  • Like, a good admin.
  • He's got hella skills is what I'm saying.

Aaaaaaaannnndd that's all I got. I can't really think of anymore past that, and it's lacking a lot of details past the starting point, bit it's what I got. If anyone wants to add on to it, feel free! I just wanna see grian as portrayed as more then the gremlin of hermitcraft or a fluffy uwu bean. Don't get me wrong, I love those characterizations, but there's so much more too his character you know? Well let me know what you think!

YES!! My personal headcannon is that, in universe, if Xisuma ever did take a vacation it would be an entire group effort to keep the server running as well as Xisuma does but I can 100% see Grian flexing his knowledge as a former admin of both a fan server and a YouTube SMP server

Honestly same. That’s why this hc specifically has it as a spur of the moment type thing. Where X is still hella sleep deprived and grian is acting on impulse. In literally any other situation the whole group would be helping out, but as it is grian showed up alone to a sleep deprived X and without really realizing took advantage of that fact to have his plan for X’s vaca work.

Grian under normal circumstances would also be more then happy to share the workload with the other admin trained hermits. But in this situation the switch over happened so fast for everyone that no one knew what to think about it. They don’t know grians skills. They don’t know his accomplishments. Hermitcraft is specifically a place where you can leave your past behind, so no one talks about the things they’ve done unless it’s directly applicable to the current situation. Even then they’ll say as little as possible.

So what you have is a situation where your usually reliable admin has decided out of thin air to quit for a couple weeks and has handed all his power to a person who while you care for dearly, is also well known for pranking, stealing, and general mischief and paints him as a particular brand of irresponsible if not particularly unreliable. He’s the kind of person you would shudder to give admin rights too because of the scale of the pranks they could pull.

And now he has it for up too two weeks.

But you know him. Depending on the season you set this hc in you have known him for years now. You know that while your friend does not come off as responsible he has also never been malicious. You know he would never purposely hurt anyone on the server you reside in. That he would kill himself first.

That’s the word though. Purposely.

You subconsciously decide to expect incompetence. That for all you care for this person they can’t possibly have the skill necessary to do all the admin work that your usual admin does. You decide to offer up some of your skill so as to make it easier for your poor friend. Who will so obviously be in so over their head that you can’t help but pity them slightly for all the stress and confusion that they will inevitably drown under. You don’t mean to be rude, you don’t mean to show your lack of trust in your friend, you don’t mean to condescend and belittle and patronize. But even if it’s only slightly, even if it’s only in hints and head tilts that you don’t realize your even doing, you do exactly that.

You show a lack of faith and trust. You condescend, belittle, and patronize. You show exactly how little you think of your friend in this instance. And they have always been perceptive to how people see them.

So they refuse you. And now your really worried.

This thought process goes through 19 of the 22 active whitelist members when they hear the news. 20 and 21 are mumbo and X. Who already know grian can handle this pretty easily as long as it’s not for too long.

22 is grian himself. Who takes his friend’s lack of care as both a personal affront and a challenge. He will do his damn best as admin for the 2 weeks he is so. And when he finally hands the responsibility back to Xisuma he will have shown all the hermits exactly what underestimating him entails. For that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Holy shit please do not do this. This is the most disorganised disaster I’ve ever seen and all they’re going to do is get vulnerable people fired. Do not go on strike as an individual. Do not do not do not. The point of a strike is collective action to show the collective power of workers.

It is not enough to say that the NLRB has made vague gestures at showing that a non-union strike is theoretically possible. If you get fired illegally and you’re not part of a union, who’s going to pay for your employment tribunal? You? Unless you’re aware of how expensive tribunals can be and have that money set to the side, you’re opening yourself up to a world of hurt.

This is genuinely the most dangerous, nonsensical thing I’ve seen on this website in a long, long time. Do not do this. Do not mistake masturbatory individualistic action for a collective movement.

If you would like to find a way to seriously stick it to your bosses, speak to your coworkers, organise an actual union in your workplace (if you need pointers on this, don’t be afraid to reach out — I’ve done it before and would be happy to share pointers!). If you want public healthcare, get involved in any of the myriad campaigns for single payer going on. But do not, do not welcome unnecessary risk into your life like this.

Seriously, this is so incredibly sus. You do not just organize a general strike on a national scale by sending out a tweet and slapping together a website with no relevant information. At best, this is a well-intentioned but dangerously misguided social media activism move. At worst, this is an intentional disinformation campaign to undermine the labor movement. Do your research and learn your history before getting involved in stuff like this- the consequences are very real
